Speaking in Owerri on Sunday, Onyeneke emphasized the importance of guiding rural residents on preventive measures against the dangers of flooding, especially in light of the heavy rainfall experienced across Nigeria, including Imo State.
Onyeneke urged proactive action from residents, emphasizing the need to clear refuse and debris that obstruct waterways to mitigate the risk of flooding. He expressed disappointment at the apathetic attitude displayed by many residents, noting the urgency of early preparations to avert potential flood disasters.
Additionally, Onyeneke called upon state and local governments to provide assistance to vulnerable communities, including machinery and manpower, to prevent flood-related issues. He proposed the establishment of temporary camps in riverine areas to aid those displaced by floods and minimize their suffering.
Furthermore, Onyeneke advocated for intensive public engagement and advocacy by government agencies and non-governmental organizations to educate the public on protecting the environment and farmland from flood damage.
In light of the looming threat of flooding, Onyeneke’s recommendations underscore the importance of proactive measures and community collaboration in disaster preparedness and response efforts.
