Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, a prominent figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and other electricity distribution companies to prioritize the provision of meters to Nigerians before implementing any tariff increment.
Mumuni emphasized that raising tariffs on services without ensuring adequate metering for consumers would only amount to further defrauding Nigerians. He underscored the importance of ensuring that customers have functional meters before any tariff adjustments take effect.
As reports indicate tariff hikes by electricity distribution companies nationwide, Mumuni stressed that the government must ensure that these companies fulfill their obligation to provide meters to customers prior to any tariff adjustments.
In a statement released through his Media Aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni highlighted the potential crisis that could arise from increasing tariffs without proper metering, especially amidst the prevailing poverty in the country.
He urged the government to prioritize meter distribution across every region of Nigeria before considering any tariff increments. Mumuni criticized past promises made by government officials regarding fixing the country’s power supply, labeling them as “lies upon lies” and emphasizing the need for sincerity in addressing the issue.
Mumuni’s stance reflects a call for a more sensible and citizen-centric approach to electricity tariffs, emphasizing the importance of addressing fundamental issues such as metering before implementing any tariff adjustments that could further burden the Nigerian populace.
