In a swift move following the impeachment of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly, Governor Godwin Obaseki has appointed Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as the new deputy governor…….READ ALSO
Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, hailing from Akoko-Edo in Edo North Senatorial District, has been chosen to fill the position left vacant by Shaibu’s impeachment.
Governor Obaseki is slated to conduct the swearing-in ceremony of Omobayo at the Dennis Osadebey Government House on Monday.
Shaibu’s impeachment came after the State Assembly adopted the report of a seven-man panel that investigated allegations of misconduct against him. Despite being given opportunities to defend himself, Shaibu or his counsel failed to appear before the panel, leading to his removal from office.
The retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa-led panel concluded its proceedings after Shaibu’s absence, prompting the State Assembly to proceed with the impeachment process.
Shaibu’s legal counsel, Oladoyin Awoyale, had initially attended the inaugural sitting but withdrew from the proceedings after the panel declined his request to suspend the proceedings pending the outcome of a suit filed in Abuja challenging the impeachment move.
As Omobayo assumes the role of deputy governor, the political landscape in Edo State is poised for further developments amidst the fallout from Shaibu’s impeachment and the appointment of his successor.
