According to a statement released by NERC via its official channels on Friday, the fine was levied due to AEDC’s failure to adhere to the prescribed customer band classifications outlined in the tariff billing guidelines. This violation has caused significant concern among consumers and industry stakeholders.
The decision to penalize AEDC followed a thorough review and analysis of customer feedback, revealing that the distribution company had applied the new tariff rates uniformly across all customer bands. This action contradicted the Order issued by NERC, which aimed to ensure fair billing practices across different customer categories.
As part of the enforcement measures, AEDC has been instructed to reimburse all affected customers in Bands B, C, D, and E who were billed above the allowed tariff bands specified in the Order. Additionally, the distribution company is required to provide the balance of customer tokens owed to affected customers at the applicable rates. These token reimbursements must be issued to affected customers by April 11, 2024.
Furthermore, AEDC has been directed to pay the substantial sum of N200 million as a penalty for its blatant disregard of NERC’s Order. The company is also mandated to file evidence of compliance with the directives by April 12, 2024.
NERC emphasized that this enforcement action underscores its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and promoting equitable practices within Nigeria’s electricity sector. The Commission reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring transparency and accountability among all stakeholders involved in the country’s electricity distribution network.

According to Alamu, the military offensive became so severe that the captives momentarily feared the air strikes more than their abductors. This intense military activity also enraged the kidnappers, who had previously raised hopes among the hostages by claiming Governor Seyi Makinde had given assurances of their release before the end of the week.
Tensions peaked when a gang commander summoned Alamu, blaming the government’s actions for frustrating the group and threatening to kill a captive. In a desperate plea, Alamu begged the commander not to harm anyone else, reminding him of the two men from their group who had already been killed. The commander eventually calmed down and asked Alamu how the stalemate could be resolved, prompting her to urge him to make demands that the victims’ families could realistically meet.
The captives faced another terrifying moment when they heard sounds of digging at night, fearing the abductors were preparing graves. However, the situation shifted unexpectedly when the gang ordered them to move camp, threatening to kill the children if they cried out for food. Throughout the ordeal, Alamu’s concerns extended beyond her own safety to the health of her husband and the possibility of not finding him at home. She expressed profound gratitude to God for surviving the 56 days and reuniting with her family.
To help public servants collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the upcoming governorship election, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Tuesday, July 28, 2026, a work-free day.
