Awa, known for his outspoken nature, squarely placed the blame on the party leadership for fielding an unpopular candidate who lacked the capacity to secure victory for the PDP during the elections.

Expressing his disappointment, Awa lamented the disregard for zoning arrangements established by the founding fathers of Abia and the PDP. He accused the leadership of sacrificing the party’s interests to cater to the selfish ambitions of a few individuals.

According to Awa, this disregard for zoning arrangements led to a significant loss of support for the PDP, with many members defecting to other parties in protest against the leadership’s decisions.

In his assessment of the situation, Awa emphasized the need for unity among party members and leaders, urging them to set aside personal interests and work towards a common goal of serving the people.

He criticized the recent defections of former PDP candidates and supporters to other parties, labeling it as an act of treachery and a clear demonstration of the internal conflicts within the party.

Awa’s call for unity and a well-defined template for accommodating all interests within the party reflects the urgency for the PDP in Abia to address its internal challenges and rebuild its strength ahead of future elections.

As the political landscape in Abia continues to evolve, Awa’s bold critique serves as a reminder to the PDP leadership of the importance of inclusive governance and strategic decision-making in securing electoral success.

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
