Reports indicate that the tertiary healthcare institution is currently facing a complete blackout following its disconnection from the national grid by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), owing to a staggering accumulated debt.

The outstanding amount in contention has sparked a dispute between UCH management and IBEDC, with figures ranging from N241 million to over N400 million. Despite the discrepancy, the consequence remains the same: darkness enveloping the hospital and disrupting essential medical services.

Visitors to UCH have described scenes of frustration and inconvenience as vital equipment lies dormant due to the lack of electricity. Patients requiring X-rays, blood tests, and other critical services are being redirected to external facilities, compounding their distress.

Furthermore, the water supply at UCH has been compromised, forcing patients and their families to resort to purchasing sachet water or even bringing water from home.

The situation has taken a toll on both patients and staff alike, with medical workers resorting to using torchlights to attend to patients amidst the darkness. The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing various unions within the hospital, has decried the hazardous working conditions and called for urgent intervention.

However, efforts to resolve the impasse have hit a roadblock, as IBEDC insists on immediate payment of N250 million before restoring power, rejecting UCH’s proposed payment plan.

In response, UCH has refuted claims of a N495 million debt and emphasized its commitment to settling outstanding bills. The hospital’s management has attributed the discrepancy to tariff increases and has proposed a payment plan, which IBEDC has rejected.

In a statement, IBEDC defended its decision to disconnect UCH, citing its fiduciary responsibility and the necessity of timely payments to ensure operational stability within the electricity supply chain.

As the standoff continues, patients and staff at UCH remain caught in the crossfire, underscoring the urgent need for a resolution to restore normalcy and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.

The Osun State APC Campaign Council has demanded that Governor Ademola Adeleke immediately dismiss Teslim Igbalaiye, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), following the recent arrest of a wanted criminal at his residence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday, the council’s head of media and publicity, Remi Omowaiye, urged the state government to step aside and let security agencies conduct a thorough, unobstructed investigation.

Key Points from the APC:

  • Interference Allegations: Omowaiye expressed strong concern that Governor Adeleke was actively trying to secure the release of individuals detained during the raid at the SSG’s home.

  • Call for Dismissal: Arguing that shielding suspects undermines the rule of law, Omowaiye stated that Governor Adeleke must fire Igbalaiye to prove he does not condone criminality.

  • Praise for Law Enforcement: The campaign council commended the Osun State Police Command and the Inspector-General of Police Special Squad for their professionalism during the operation.

Adeleke Campaign Dismisses Allegations as “Politically Motivated”

In a swift response, Jamiu Olawumi, the Director of Strategic Communication for the Imole Campaign Council, brushed off the APC’s demands, labeling the accusations as cheap political attacks meant to tarnish the SSG’s reputation.

Key Points from the Adeleke Campaign:

  • Character Defense: Olawumi defended Igbalaiye as a dedicated patriot, a trained lawyer, and a respected native of Osogbo whose stellar background cannot be easily undermined.

  • Dismissal of Critics: He characterized the opposition’s outcry as “wailings” from political rivals who lack the matching stature, achievements, or commitment to service delivery that the SSG possesses.

Background Context

Police operatives raided the SSG’s Osogbo residence on Wednesday, leading to arrests including that of the wanted suspect. While Igbalaiye was subsequently released by the police on Thursday, law enforcement authorities confirmed that investigations into the matter remain active.
