reveals that the House of Assembly, on March 6, 2024, served an impeachment notice on the deputy governor, citing alleged misconduct and perjury, with a seven-day ultimatum for him to respond to the petition.
Due to purported evasion by the deputy governor in receiving the impeachment notice, the House ordered alternative means of service through the state-owned Observer Newspaper and the Vanguard Newspapers, respectively. This notice was published on March 12, 2024.
During its plenary session on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the House passed a resolution instructing the Chief Judge to establish a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations against the deputy governor.

A statement from the Chief Registrar of the State High Court, B.O. Osawaru, obtained by DAILY POST, disclosed that retired Justice S.A. Omonua (Rtd) will chair the panel. Additionally, three professors from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Benson Idahosa University (BIU) have been appointed as panel members. They are Professor Violet Aigbokhaevbo from the Faculty of Law at UNIBEN, Professor Boniface Onomion Edegbai from the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology at UNIBEN, and Professor Theresa Akpoghome, former Dean of the Faculty of Law at BIU.
Other members of the panel include Surveyor Andrew Oliha, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, and Idris Abdulkareen.
The letter states:
“This is to inform the general public that in line with Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Honourable Chief Judge of Edo State, Honourable Justice D.I. Okungbowa has constituted the PANEL OF SEVEN PERSONS to investigate the allegations contained in the impeachment notice against the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Honourable Philip Shaibu.
The said Panel of Seven Persons comprises the following persons:

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
