Osagie Ize-Iyamu, an aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial ticket in Edo State, has withdrawn from the race just 24 hours before the party’s primary election……..CONTINUE READING
Ize-Iyamu made the announcement in a statement released to journalists in Benin, the state capital, on Friday.
In the statement addressed to the national chairman of the party, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and copied to the Acting State Chairman of the party, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, Ize-Iyamu described the decision as painful but necessary after extensive consultations with family, friends, political associates, and supporters.
He also pledged his support to any candidate that emerges from the primary election.
Here is the full text of the withdrawal letter:
“A few months ago, after extensive interactions with family, friends, political associates, and supporters, I entered the 2024 Edo state gubernatorial race out of my passion and commitment to rescuing Edo state from its current state of decrepitude.
“I joined the contest as a progressive democrat, with an open mind to contest and accept the result of a fair, credible, and transparent process. I appreciate and commend the effort made by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC to correct the erroneous impression maliciously created by certain persons that some aspirants, including myself, had been disqualified from the gubernatorial contest. The NWC constituted the authentic screening committee, and all twelve aspirants who purchased and completed the nomination forms were successfully screened and subsequently issued clearance certificates. This step was praiseworthy and helped in restoring our integrity in the eyes of the public.
“Regrettably, I wish to announce my withdrawal from the race. Although painful, this decision has become imperative after exhaustive consultations with my family, friends, political associates, and supporters. I make this sacrifice in the interest of the peace and unity that the party desperately requires at both state and national levels.
“I humbly appeal to the good people of Edo state to accept my decision, which is very personal, and I promise to be there for them at all times.
“I acknowledge the fatherly role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as well as the party’s National leadership for their fairness and commitment to the democratic process. Likewise, I remain grateful to the state working committee for their principled stand to allow a level playing field for all aspirants. I am extremely appreciative of my family, friends, supporters, well-wishers, and the extraordinary hardworking men and women of our campaign organization who were prepared to stop at nothing to see me fly the party’s flag. I salute your great works, your steadfastness, and courage.
“Finally, as a loyal party man, I wish to pledge that I and my teeming supporters shall support any candidate that emerges in the primary election holding tomorrow.”

2027 Power Struggle: Nwebonyi Rubbishes Rumors Of Single-Term Zoning For Ebonyi North.
Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, has rejected assertions that he is breaching a zoning agreement that would supposedly limit Ebonyi North senators to one term. Speaking to the press in Abakaliki on Sunday, the Senator pointed to the precedent set by former Governor Sam Egwu, who successfully served two terms in the Senate, to argue that the alleged one-term policy lacks binding authority. Highlighting his own constituency initiatives and record, Nwebonyi stated he faces no serious competition for his seat and emphasized that public service should be defined by sacrifice rather than personal gain.
Additionally, the Senator expressed strong support for the APC’s prospects in Ebonyi State and lauded President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing infrastructure development in the South-East. He further praised Governor Francis Nwifuru as a unifying leader, dismissing rumors of friction within the Izzi clan and calling on stakeholders to prioritize the state’s collective development over divisive politics.

On Sunday, May 31, 2026, thousands of Arsenal fans flooded the streets of north London to celebrate the club’s first Premier League title since 2004, successfully shifting the focus from their Champions League final loss the previous day. The festivities, which began after 2 p.m. at the Emirates Stadium, wound through Highbury, Canonbury, and Upper Street before concluding back at the stadium. This parade honored a league victory confirmed on May 19, ending a 22-year championship drought. During the event, fans were seen climbing trees and rooftops to see Mikel Arteta’s squad as the players showcased the Premier League trophy. The procession included four buses, one of which carried the Arsenal Women’s team, winners of the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup this past February.
This celebration followed a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, where Arsenal ultimately fell in a penalty shootout after misses by Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes. Despite the European defeat, the Premier League title held immense significance for the team, coming after three consecutive seasons as runners-up. Reflecting on the massive turnout, journalist Matt Graveling described the celebration as the largest sporting event he had witnessed in his 15-year career.
