Contrary to earlier fears, the police clarified that the rescued individuals had not been kidnapped but rather deceived by a Cameroonian human trafficking ring promising job opportunities in Nigeria. Upon investigation at the Okeoyibo Police Division, it was discovered that the victims had been lured with false promises and had given money to the scammers.
Reports indicate that some victims had sold their assets back home to finance their trip to Nigeria, where they were promised employment. However, upon arrival, they were confined to the duplex and instructed not to leave until securing jobs.
The distressing situation came to light after a concerned resident alerted authorities about suspicious activities in the building. The victims, who had been confined for up to six months, were rescued following the intervention of law enforcement and community members.
While the primary suspect managed to evade capture by fleeing to Cameroon, police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hudenyin confirmed the rescue of 34 individuals. He revealed that the victims had all been deceived with false promises of employment and left stranded after their money was taken.
