Outrage As Sachet Water Prices Soar In Abia, Consumers Demand Action....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Residents of Umuahia and other parts of Abia State have expressed frustration over the exorbitant increase in the price of sachet water, commonly known as pure water…….CONTINUE READING

Investigations by NivoNews revealed that the price of sachet water has skyrocketed to N50 per sachet, marking a significant surge from the previous price of 2 sachets for N50, just two weeks ago.

Furthermore, a bag containing 20 sachets, which was previously sold for N300, is now being retailed at prices ranging from N400 to N450 by vendors.

The sudden price hike follows a recent two-day strike action undertaken by members of the Table and Sachet Water Producers Association in Abia State.

Following the strike, the association decided to increase the price per bag to N350 from the previous N250, with retailers passing on the cost to consumers at N50 per sachet.

Responding to the situation, some residents lamented resorting to alternative sources such as boreholes and public water fountains, despite being aware of the health risks associated with consuming untreated water.

Dr. Terry Omemma, a public health expert, emphasized the urgency of addressing the affordability of clean drinking water, warning of potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases due to unsafe water consumption.

However, the Association of Table and Sachet Water Producers in Abia State defended the price hike, attributing it to the escalating costs of production materials.

Chairman Peter Nwakanma clarified that the price would be adjusted if production costs decreased in the market, shifting the blame to retailers for selling sachets at N50 despite purchasing a bag at N350.

In contrast, shop owner Mr. Onumba Kalu challenged Nwakanma’s stance, questioning why the association raised prices in the first place if they were now blaming retailers for the inflated costs.

As consumers continue to grapple with the burden of inflated water prices, calls are mounting for immediate action from both producers and the Abia State government to alleviate the strain on residents and ensure access to affordable, clean drinking water.

The future of Nigeria’s Naira-for-Crude policy remains in limbo as negotiations continue between the Nigerian government and Dangote Refinery. The six-month agreement between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery expired on March 31, 2025, without a renewal, leading to the suspension of the refinery’s sale of refined petroleum products in Naira. However, the refinery has continued processing approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil daily, with 35% of the crude sourced from international markets, particularly Brazil and Equatorial Guinea.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Although the policy’s future is still under review, sources suggest that its economic implications, especially concerning fuel prices and foreign exchange rates, make it crucial to the national economy. Despite challenges in crude supply from NNPC, Dangote Refinery has expanded its global sourcing and is currently sourcing crude from Brazil’s Petrobras and Equatorial Guinea.

No official agreement has been reached yet to extend the Naira-for-Crude deal. The Nigerian government’s committee in charge of the policy is waiting for recommendations from the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission before proceeding. Meanwhile, the refinery’s management has expressed uncertainty regarding the renewal of the deal, citing concerns over the financial strain and volatility of exchange rates. The future of the policy remains unclear, with NNPC expected to supply crude oil to Dangote Refinery in April, but payment terms are yet to be finalized.

Experts attribute the drop in cooking gas prices to several factors, including fluctuations in global energy costs and adjustments within local supply chains. Despite recent variations in crude oil and natural gas prices, the reduction is perceived as a welcome development for Nigerian consumers.

By spending less on cooking gas, households and small businesses will now see some financial relief in their monthly budgets, especially during these economically challenging times.
