In an interview with BBC Hausa monitored in Kaduna, Abubakar recounted the terrifying ordeal he and his fellow captives endured at the hands of the bandits. He described how they were herded like cattle, forced to trek through the bush, and even crawl at times. Some of the girls among them became weak and fell down due to exhaustion, prompting the bandits to transport them on motorcycles.
Abubakar revealed that at one point, when a plane flew overhead, the bandits instructed them to undress and lie down to avoid detection. They even crossed a river, drinking its water to quench their thirst before continuing their arduous journey.
In a stroke of luck, Abubakar noticed a shrub that resembled his clothing and stealthily hid inside, crawling away like a snake when the opportunity arose. He waited until it was safe before emerging and navigating his way through the wilderness.
Exhausted and desperate for help, Abubakar encountered an elderly man who guided him to safety, eventually leading him to Gayan, a nearby community. From there, he managed to escape and reunite with his family.
Abubakar’s daring escape serves as a testament to the resilience and courage of those caught in the crosshairs of insecurity in Kaduna State.
