Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has urged the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) to compensate the families of those who lost their lives in a stampede during the agency’s initiative to sell cheap rice……..CONTINUE READING
The NCS had announced plans to sell rice and other seized food items at a reduced rate to alleviate the hardship faced by Nigerians. However, the initiative was halted after seven individuals reportedly died in a stampede at the Customs zonal headquarters in Yaba, where the sale was taking place.
Falana demanded that the NCS takes full responsibility for the incident and compensates the families of the victims. He criticized the service for failing to identify and offer condolences to the bereaved families.
He stated, “Considering that a bag of rice was priced at N77,000 at the time, the Nigeria Customs Service should have anticipated that its zonal headquarters in Yaba would not be able to handle the large crowd invited to purchase a 25kg bag of rice for N10,000.”
Falana emphasized the need for urgent steps to identify the families of the deceased and provide them with adequate compensation. He warned that if the authorities ignore this advice, legal action would be pursued to enforce the fundamental right to life guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
Furthermore, Falana urged Customs to resume the initiative and implement measures to prevent future stampedes. He suggested distributing the items through local government councils and development areas to avoid similar tragedies in Lagos and other states.
