Calls for Rotational Presidency Intensify Amid Constitution Review....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Stakeholders have intensified calls for the adoption of rotational presidency in Nigeria, as the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review received a bill proposing the rotation of power among geopolitical zones, senatorial zones, and federal constituencies……..CONTINUE READING
Sponsored by Ojema Ojetu, a member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, Benue State, the bill seeks to address cries of marginalization and promote inclusivity in the nation’s political landscape.
If passed, the bill would alter Section 133 of the constitution to mandate the rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones, with each state holding office for a maximum of two terms. Additionally, zones that have previously produced a president would be ineligible until other zones have had their turn.
The proposed legislation extends to the governorship, advocating for rotational leadership among the senatorial zones within each state.
Since the return to democracy in 1999, only three regions – South-West, North-West, and South-South – have produced Nigerian presidents, raising concerns about equitable representation.
Support for the bill has been voiced by various stakeholders, including human rights groups, socio-cultural organizations, and political figures. They argue that rotational presidency is essential for social justice, democracy sustainability, and the prevention of ethnic hegemony.
However, skepticism remains regarding the bill’s implementation, with concerns about political adherence and potential legal challenges. Despite these challenges, proponents emphasize the necessity of enshrining rotational presidency in the constitution to safeguard its objectives and ensure equitable representation for all regions.
