In a statement issued on Friday by the Deputy Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Salisu Shehu, the Sultan stated that if the moon is sighted on Sunday, fasting will commence automatically on Monday. However, if the moon is not sighted on Sunday, fasting will begin on Tuesday.
Additionally, the Sultan encouraged affluent Muslims to engage in acts of charity towards the less privileged in their communities before, during, and after Ramadan.
The statement emphasized: “The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, extends its warmest greetings to the entire Muslim Ummah on the auspicious occasion of the forthcoming 1445 AH Ramadan Fast. The Council prays for the preservation of every Muslim’s life to partake in the spiritual exercise and reap its full benefits.
“In accordance with the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), the President-General urges the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to observe the crescent of Ramadan 1445 AH immediately after sunset on Sunday, 10th March 2024, corresponding to 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH.
“If the crescent is sighted by trustworthy Muslims on the said evening, then His Eminence will declare Monday, 11th March 2024, as the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH.
“However, if the crescent is not sighted, Tuesday, 12th March 2024, automatically becomes the first day of Ramadan, 1445AH.”
It’s worth noting that the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, causing Ramadan to fall approximately 10 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar.
