Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has criticized Nigeria’s current constitution, highlighting its inconsistencies and contradictions. He emphasized the need for restructuring to address the nation’s challenges effectively……….CONTINUE READING
Speaking at a ‘policy dialogue on a new governance structure for Nigeria’ in Abuja, organized by the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Cardinal Onaiyekan stressed that the current constitution fails to incorporate religious contributions to national development. He advocated for a decentralized power structure to enhance efficiency at the state level, rather than merely pursuing constitutional amendments.
The remarks by Cardinal Onaiyekan come in the wake of the House of Representatives’ inauguration of a committee tasked with reviewing the 1999 constitution. The committee has set a 24-month timeline for completing the exercise.
Cardinal Onaiyekan suggested considering a shift to a parliamentary system and urged a deeper understanding of why Nigeria moved away from this model in favor of the current presidential system. Additionally, he called for amnesty to be extended not only to bandits but also to other individuals incarcerated in the country.
As discussions on constitutional reform continue, Cardinal Onaiyekan’s insights underscore the importance of addressing fundamental issues in Nigeria’s governance structure to foster unity, development, and inclusivity.
