Allegations Of Political Interference: Plateau State Legislative Processes In Limbo....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a prominent voice within the party, Bitrus Shaina, has raised concerns over the state of affairs regarding the legislative functioning in Plateau State. In an interview with The Sun, Shaina accused Governor Caleb Mutfwang of actively obstructing the state’s legislative processes, thereby impeding the democratic functioning of the state……..CONTINUE READING

Shaina pointed to recent legal developments that have stirred controversy within the state’s political landscape. Notably, the Appeal Court in Abuja nullified the elections of all Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in Plateau State, citing the party’s organizational shortcomings in sponsoring candidates for the elections. This decision, according to Shaina, marked a significant turning point in the state’s political dynamics.

Moreover, Shaina highlighted the court’s prior ruling that invalidated the elections of federal legislators affiliated with the PDP. As a consequence, certificates of return were withdrawn from these legislators and awarded to candidates from the APC and Labour Party. While this directive was duly implemented at the national level, Shaina expressed dismay over the delay in inaugurating state legislators, attributing it to Governor Mutfwang’s alleged interference.

According to Shaina, Governor Mutfwang’s purported influence has resulted in the postponement of the resumption of the State Assembly, exacerbating the existing political tensions. He further alleged that ousted PDP lawmakers, taking advantage of this delay, petitioned for their reinstatement based on a Supreme Court judgment affirming the governor’s election. However, their legal maneuvering was met with dismissal by the court, which deemed it lacking in merit and a waste of judicial resources.

Shaina underscored the gravity of the situation within the state assembly, noting the prolonged period of inactivity despite assurances from the speaker regarding the swearing-in of new members. He warned that such delays could potentially undermine the constitutional functioning of the house and called for urgent action to resolve the impasse.

In light of these allegations and the broader implications for democratic governance in Plateau State, stakeholders are urged to address the concerns raised by Shaina and ensure the unhindered functioning of the legislative machinery for the benefit of the state and its citizens.
