Following a crucial meeting with the federal government, major cement manufacturers, including Dangote, BUA, and Lafarge, have agreed to reduce the price of cement, aiming to ease the burden on Nigerian consumers…….CONTINUE READING

The decision comes amid nationwide concern over the sharp increase in cement prices, reflecting a broader trend of rising costs across various sectors of the economy.

Prior to the agreement, a bag of cement was priced between N10,000 and N14,000, significantly impacting construction costs and housing affordability.

Despite the consensus to slash prices by about 50%, reports indicate that the cost of cement has remained relatively unchanged post-meeting, hovering near its peak.

This development has raised concerns among consumers and industry stakeholders regarding the effectiveness of the agreement and its implementation timeline.

David Iweta, the National Chairman of the Cement Producers’ Association of Nigeria (CEPAN), attributed the persistent rise in cement prices to demand surpassing supply.

He expressed optimism that improved cooperation between cement manufacturers and the federal government could lead to a significant price reduction within 30 days, citing foreign exchange rate fluctuations as a contributing factor to price volatility.
