The police spokesman, Alabo Alfred, stated that the police were working to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order amid the uncertainty surrounding the fate of 16 PDP lawmakers who were sacked by the Court of Appeal.

The appellate court had declared APC candidates as the winners of the March 18, 2023, House of Assembly elections, leading to the removal of the PDP lawmakers. Similarly, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang was also sacked by the Court of Appeal but later reinstated by the Supreme Court.

In light of the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding the governor’s case, the 16 sacked PDP lawmakers are seeking to be reinstated to their positions.

Supporters from both camps gathered at the Assembly complex, with PDP supporters expressing concern that the APC members, who have yet to be sworn in, might attempt to forcefully enter the Assembly to impeach the Speaker and subsequently the governor.

Conversely, APC supporters argue that the Speaker’s refusal to swear in the APC members, following the Court of Appeal’s ruling in their favor, is unacceptable.

As tensions simmered, neither the sacked PDP lawmakers nor the APC members appeared at the Assembly complex on Tuesday. Instead, both camps held separate meetings to discuss their next steps.

Timothy Dantong, one of the sacked PDP lawmakers, confirmed that their meeting was ongoing and promised to provide updates once concluded.

The situation highlights the political tension in Plateau State amidst the legal battles and power struggles between the PDP and APC, with both sides awaiting further legal decisions to determine the composition of the State Assembly.
