In a bid to maintain traffic orderliness and curb criminal activities, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) carried out a robust operation, impounding 123 vehicles for illegal parking and shutting down unauthorized garages on bridges across Lagos Island…….CONTINUE READING
Led by the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the enforcement team executed the operation in line with the directives of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa.
Despite prior warnings to both private and commercial drivers against haphazard parking and unlawful garage operations near bridges, compliance remained lacking.
The impounded vehicles were predominantly found in areas such as Ebute-Ero by Idumota Bridge, Simpson Bridge, Apongbon under Bridge, and the Elegbata vicinity of Lagos Island.
Bakare-Oki expressed dismay at the brazen disregard for traffic regulations, emphasizing the disruption caused to motorists and commuters navigating these bridges.
He asserted, “We will continue to ensure free flow of traffic by scaling up our enforcement and clampdown on these stubborn private and commercial bus drivers.”
In a parallel operation targeting criminal extortion, LASTMA apprehended 19 individuals involved in fraudulent activities, including the unlawful collection of parking fees from motorists. Investigations revealed that these impostors masqueraded as government officials, employing fake identification cards to extort money from unsuspecting drivers and roadside traders.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, underscored the severity of these offenses, affirming the perpetrators’ imminent prosecution at the Lagos State Mobile Court.
Both the vehicle owners and drivers implicated in the violations, alongside the apprehended criminals, will face legal consequences under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
