Lawal highlighted the Ministry’s proactive stance in safeguarding the country’s diverse array of wild fauna and flora, underscoring the urgent need to bridge the gap between humanity and nature.
The theme of this year’s World Wildlife Day, “Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation,” emphasizes the significant role of technology in wildlife preservation. Lawal stressed that technological advancements offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance conservation efforts and deepen the connection between people and the natural world.
He urged collective action to leverage digital tools for better wildlife understanding, protection, and preservation, emphasizing the transformative potential of technology in safeguarding the natural treasures of Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Kambari, echoed Lawal’s sentiments, emphasizing the vital role of wildlife in maintaining ecosystem balance and sustaining life on Earth. He acknowledged the numerous threats facing wildlife, including wildlife trade, poaching, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, which have contributed to the decline in wildlife population.
Kambari called for concerted efforts to address these challenges and preserve Nigeria’s rich biodiversity for future generations.
