Brig. Gen. Ishaq Abdullahi (Rtd), the Special Adviser to the Borno State Government on Security Affairs, made these remarks during a recent interview in Maiduguri, as reported by Nivo News.

According to Abdullahi, the leadership of the insurgent group is now in disarray, with only a few of its founding members believed to be still alive.

The government official elaborated that many senior commanders of Boko Haram lost their lives due to internal power struggles between factions loyal to Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) and those supporting the late Abubakar Shekau, who passed away in 2021.

Abdullahi explained, “Out of the 300 individuals who initiated the Boko Haram sect prior to 2009, it is estimated that less than 10 remain alive today. Even among these remaining leaders, their influence has waned significantly due to internal conflicts.”

He further detailed various causes of death among former Boko Haram members, including fatalities from military operations, snake bites, drowning during rainy seasons, and injuries sustained during confrontations. Additionally, a considerable number surrendered to security forces in recent years.

Furthermore, internal strife within the group, particularly following Shekau’s demise, led to the demise of a significant portion of its die-hard adherents, according to Abdullahi.

The situation within ISWAP has also been tumultuous, with many of its top commanders perishing due to internal disputes.

Abdullahi concluded by asserting that the prevailing narrative of Boko Haram ideology has largely dissipated, with those currently claiming association with the group being mere criminals devoid of any ideological convictions
