According to Onanuga, the fine was levied against Binance due to its involvement in illegal operations that significantly contributed to the devaluation of the Nigerian currency. He emphasized that Binance’s unauthorized fixing of exchange rates undermines the authority of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and adversely affects the nation’s economic stability.

The government’s crackdown on Binance extends beyond the imposition of fines. Recent directives to mobile networks to block access to Binance platforms and the removal of the naira from its peer-to-peer feature demonstrate the firm stance taken against cryptocurrency exchanges.
