According to reports, officials from the Awka Capital Territory Development Agency, tasked with Awka city’s development, took harsh measures against newspaper vendors, seizing and destroying their merchandise.
In a statement signed by spokesperson Humphrey Iloh, the LP forum condemned these actions as dictatorial and referenced a separate incident involving the killing of a drug dealer in the state. They urged the Soludo administration to refrain from further acts of humiliation and intimidation against residents.
The LP forum warned that if such actions persist, they would have no choice but to seek legal recourse, including petitioning the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor to protect the people of Anambra from what they perceive as a dictatorial regime under Soludo.
The group stated, “We have observed with concern the recent events, including the destruction of newspaper stands and the assault on newspaper vendors in Awka under Prof. Soludo’s leadership, as evidenced by social media posts with photographic and video evidence.
“If these actions continue, we will have no recourse but to seek judicial intervention to compel the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor, in order to save the people of Anambra from what we consider a dictatorial regime under Soludo.
“Furthermore, we strongly condemn the tragic incident involving the killing of Mr. Arinze Obunadike, a drug dealer, by the Special Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) in Ogbo-ogwu, Onitsha. These events, coupled with previous actions, clearly indicate that Anambra State is now governed by authoritarian rule.
“The current administration’s approach contradicts Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which prioritizes the security and welfare of the people as the primary purpose of government. This is not the peaceful and inclusive Anambra that previous administrations worked to build.”
