Speaking during a courtesy call by the Association of Clerks of State Houses of Assembly, Abbas, represented by the House’s Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, emphasized the need for the establishment of state police to bolster internal security. He argued that state policing would be more effective as the operators would have better knowledge of the local terrain compared to the federal police.

Abbas highlighted the legislative efforts made by the 9th National Assembly to address key national issues such as state policing. He emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and finding common ground to arrive at solutions that benefit all Nigerians.

The Speaker pointed out that while the federal government has jurisdiction over certain matters, the decentralization of policing would better address the diverse needs and perspectives across different states. He cited examples of legislative interventions made to improve governance, such as the transfer of railway and power industries from the exclusive list to the concurrent list.

Abbas underscored the importance of ensuring that policing aligns with international best practices and local realities. He emphasized the need to train police officers within their communities to enhance their effectiveness in maintaining law and order.

Furthermore, Abbas cautioned against the proliferation of vigilante groups and emphasized the importance of managing them in line with core policing principles to prevent exacerbating insecurity.

In conclusion, Abbas reiterated the commitment of the National Assembly to address the security challenges facing Nigeria and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve lasting solutions.
