Reportedly, police officers from the Ojodu Divisional Headquarters used tear gas canisters to disperse the protesting riders during a raid, sparking a confrontation between the riders and law enforcement officers.

According to eyewitnesses, the clash resulted in the injury of one police officer and the vandalism of the police patrol van by the riders.

Following the altercation, road users found themselves stranded, and residents opted to remain indoors to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.

A rider recounted, “The fight started yesterday when some policemen confiscated motorcycles in the Grammar School area. One of the riders allegedly injured a policeman, which led to a retaliatory crackdown.”

Adamu, another rider, claimed that one officer sustained a neck injury and their patrol van was attacked by the protesting riders.

Residents also expressed concerns about the escalating violence, with one resident, Rasheedah, stating, “Some motorcyclists injured policemen after their Okadas were seized during a raid. The police returned in numbers to retaliate, firing tear gas canisters to disperse the riders.”

A senior police officer confirmed the clash, attributing it to a routine raid to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles. However, details regarding the extent of the officer’s injury were not disclosed.

In response to inquiries, the police directed further questions to the command’s spokesperson for additional information.

This incident adds to previous clashes between law enforcement and motorcycle riders, underscoring the ongoing tension surrounding the ban on commercial motorcycles in Lagos State.
