Kano State Unseals 10 Warehouses Accused Of Hoarding Foodstuffs, Prices Begin To Drop....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Following allegations of hoarding foodstuffs, the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission has taken action to address the issue. The commission recently unsealed 10 warehouses that were previously sealed due to suspicions of hoarding essential commodities…………CONTINUE READING
Chairman of the commission, Muhyi Magaji, stated that the owners of the warehouses responded to the commission’s directives and were instructed to open their warehouses for public sale. Consequently, Kano has observed a decline in the prices of foodstuffs across various markets in the state.
Magaji emphasized that the commission’s intervention prompted dealers to bring their commodities to the market and reduce prices. Market visits to locations such as Dawanau International Grains Market, Singer Market, and Kwari Market confirmed this trend, with noticeable reductions in the prices of grains compared to previous levels.
During the operation to unseal the warehouses, it was discovered that the warehouses were stocked with various food items, including spaghetti, rice, sugar, and more. Despite the absence of the owners during the operation, they were subsequently summoned to appear before the commission to face charges for their alleged illegal activities.
The crackdown on hoarding has had a significant impact on curbing the increase in food prices in Kano State. Magaji highlighted that this initiative aimed to prevent artificial scarcity and ensure the availability of essential commodities to the public at reasonable prices.
In response to the commission’s actions, grain dealers at Dawanau International Grains Market announced a reduction in the prices of grains. This move followed a warning by the state anti-graft agency to prosecute dealers found hoarding grains for profit maximization.
As a result of the crackdown, prices of maize, guinea corn, millet, and beans have decreased, providing relief to consumers. Additionally, the Nigeria Customs Service, Kano Area Command, intercepted four trucks loaded with food items intended for illegal export, further demonstrating efforts to safeguard the nation’s economy and ensure food security.
The seizure of these items underscores the Customs Service’s commitment to combating smuggling activities and enforcing border closure policies aimed at protecting the economy and public health.
Overall, the unsealing of warehouses and subsequent reduction in food prices reflect positive steps towards addressing hoarding practices and promoting fair trade practices in Kano State.
