The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has unequivocally dismissed the warning issued by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the planned nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28…..READ ALSO
The DSS had cautioned the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) against proceeding with the protest, citing concerns about potential unrest.
In response, Ajaero affirmed the NLC’s determination to go ahead with the protest, emphasizing that the movement remains undeterred by the DSS’s admonition. He criticized the DSS’s stance, stating that the security agency should refrain from attempting to intimidate the union.
Expressing apprehension over the DSS’s awareness of plans to disrupt the peaceful protest, Ajaero called attention to the agency’s failure to apprehend those plotting violence. Despite the DSS’s assertions, Ajaero stressed that the protest aims to address the harsh economic conditions facing Nigerians, including soaring inflation and the devaluation of the Naira.
Ajaero reiterated that the protest would be conducted peacefully, as is customary with labor demonstrations. He expressed disappointment in the DSS’s attempt to dissuade the NLC from exercising its democratic right to protest, particularly amid widespread economic hardship.
Asserting the NLC’s commitment to upholding the country’s sovereignty and security, Ajaero underscored that the protest is a reflection of the people’s grievances against the burdensome cost of living. He affirmed that the NLC would not be swayed by attempts to discredit or undermine its legitimate efforts to advocate for the welfare of Nigerian workers.
As tensions escalate between the NLC and the DSS, the outcome of the planned protest and the government’s response to it will undoubtedly be closely monitored by the public, labor unions, and government authorities alike.
