According to court martial records housed in the US National Archives, as reported by the Washington Post on Monday, Moses J. Robinette faced trial after a confrontation with fellow Union Army civilian employee John J. Alexander on March 21, 1864.

The altercation occurred in the winter camp of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia, where Robinette was charged with attempted murder after a heated exchange with Alexander, who had allegedly overheard disparaging remarks about him from Robinette to a cook and subsequently attacked him.

During the scuffle, Robinette drew a pocketknife, inflicting several cuts on Alexander before being restrained by others present, as per the documents.

Despite Robinette’s defense that he acted in self-defense to prevent serious injury, military judges found him guilty and sentenced him to two years of hard labor.

However, three army officers petitioned President Lincoln to reconsider Robinette’s conviction, arguing that the punishment was disproportionately severe and that Robinette had acted in self-defense against a physically superior opponent.

Lincoln reviewed the case and ultimately granted a pardon on September 1 of the same year.

Historian David J. Gerleman, in an article for the Washington Post, characterized this story as one that had remained untold for 160 years. He highlighted the significance of the recently discovered trial transcript, emphasizing its role in illuminating a previously unknown chapter of Biden family history and underscoring the vast array of Civil War narratives yet to be explored.

“The slender sheaf of 22 well-preserved pages of his trial transcript, unobtrusively squeezed among many hundreds of other routine court-martial cases in the National Archives, reveals the hidden link between the two men — and between two presidents across the centuries,” Gerleman wrote. “Those few pages not only fill in an unknown piece of Biden family history, but also serve as a reminder of just how many Civil War stories have yet to be told.”

The footage, which also captured Alli briefly touching the student’s lap, sparked varied reactions and online speculation. Strongly condemning attempts by certain platforms to sexualize the interaction, the campaign team dismissed these claims as misleading and politically motivated. They characterized Alli’s actions as a completely innocent, spontaneous, and fatherly gesture born entirely out of a seating shortage. Expressing disappointment that political desperation would twist a simple meeting with students seeking support into something sordid, the organization urged the public to ignore the false narratives and emphasized Alli’s well-known, supportive rapport with young people.
