The court found the couple guilty of the brutal killing, which took place in March 2021. Digama, a warrant officer stationed at the Apel police station in Limpopo, was shot and robbed of his South African Police Service (SAPS) pistol and vehicle while visiting a friend’s tuckshop in Lerajane village, Mohlaletsi, Sekhukhune district.
According to Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Limpopo, investigations revealed that the deceased had been shot dead with an unidentified pistol before his vehicle was set ablaze.
Police inquiries led them to Maesela, the deceased’s wife, and her lover, Mashiba. Further investigation uncovered previous attempts to poison Digama by his wife, who shared a child with her co-accused lover.
During sentencing, senior State advocate Lerato Mohlaka argued for the prescribed sentence, emphasizing the senseless, premeditated, and remorseless nature of the crime. Mohlaka revealed that the accused had attempted to conceal the crime by bribing witnesses and seeking cleansing rituals from a traditional healer.
In a chilling detail, the court heard Digama’s final words before his murder, where he addressed his wife, Maesela, before she fatally shot him three times at point-blank range.
Acting Judge Ephraim Makgoba handed down life imprisonment to both defendants for the murder charge, along with additional sentences of five years for unlawful possession of a firearm and three years for unlawful possession of ammunition, all to run concurrently.
The director of public prosecutions in Limpopo, advocate Ivy Thenga, commended the prosecution team and police investigators for their thorough work, which led to a successful prosecution in the case.

Case Background and Prosecution
The convicts were apprehended following a violent cult clash at the Ikenne Town Hall on October 23, 2023, which severely disrupted public peace and local activities.
Prosecuting officer ASP Olaide Rawlings established during the trial that Okusanya belonged to the Eiye Confraternity, while Gafar was affiliated with the Alora Confraternity, alongside other accomplices currently at large. Their actions violated several provisions of the Prohibition of Forcible Entry and Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Cultism, Kidnapping and Other Anti-Violent and Related Offences Law of Ogun State, 2016.
Finding the prosecution’s evidence credible and compelling beyond a reasonable doubt, Magistrate Oke delivered the sentence to serve as a strict deterrent against unlawful secret societies and violent disturbances in the state.
