World Football In Tears: Jorge Messi Passes Away At 68, Leaving An Unfillable Void
Jorge Messi, the father and longtime representative of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has passed away at the age of 68. His death was reported on Saturday by MARCA, citing Infobae, after he reportedly died around 10 p.m. on Friday at a medical facility in Rosario following a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, Celia Cuccittini, and their four children: Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias, and Maria Sol.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Jorge played a foundational role in shaping Lionel’s life and career from a young age. When Lionel was diagnosed with a growth-related condition and local treatment options fell through, Jorge helped orchestrate his relocation to Barcelona at 13 years old. He stayed with his young son in Spain during the difficult transition while the rest of the family remained in Rosario. Reflecting on those hardships in a 2007 interview, Lionel recalled that his father gave him the choice to return to Argentina, but when Lionel chose to stay, Jorge remained by his side—a pivotal turning point in his rise to football history.
As Lionel’s career flourished, Jorge transitioned into managing his business and professional affairs, handling high-profile negotiations while keeping a low public profile and rarely giving interviews. Reflecting on their journey, Jorge once noted that their shared struggles had forged a stronger family bond, praising Lionel not just as a great player but as an exceptional person.
Anxieties surrounding his health initially surfaced during the 2026 World Cup when Lionel grew visibly emotional after an opening-match hat-trick, attributing his tears to complicated personal and family circumstances. Although the family later stated he was under medical care and recovering at the time, his condition ultimately led to his passing. Before managing his son’s career, Jorge worked as a chemical technician and manager at the Argentine steel company Acindar in the 1980s, and had played youth football as a midfielder for Newell’s Old Boys before stepping away due to military service.
