The commission had taken action on Friday, February 16, by sealing the stores due to concerns regarding transparency in pricing practices.

According to the commission, Sahad Stores had been displaying lower prices on product shelves while charging higher prices during checkout, leaving customers feeling misled and disadvantaged. The FCCPC labeled this behavior as “violations involving misleading pricing and lack of transparency.”

In a statement issued by the acting Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Adamu Abdullahi, and obtained by PUNCH Online on Saturday, Abdullahi announced the reopening of the store.

The statement explained, “On February 16, 2024, FCCPC operatives visited Sahad Stores and confirmed through random checks that the deceptive practice did not only continue, but cashiers also charged prices at their discretion, leaving unsuspecting customers vulnerable to unfair pricing.

“Exercising its authority under Section 18(f), the Commission temporarily sealed the premises.

“However, following a mutual understanding and commitment from Sahad Stores to implement transparent pricing practices, the FCCPC reopened the store on February 16, 2024, at about 7 p.m.”

It reiterated its dedication to combatting exploitative or misleading practices that undermine consumer rights.

The commission underscored its role in safeguarding consumer rights and deterring deceptive business practices, citing potential penalties for violations outlined in section 115 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, including fines for organizations and imprisonment for directors.

It urged all businesses to adhere to fair and transparent pricing practices to ensure consumer protection and foster a healthy market environment.

Recalling the events leading to the initial closure of the store, the commission mentioned its investigation of Sahad Stores on January 8, 2024, following reports of misleading pricing practices. The investigation revealed discrepancies between displayed and charged prices, violating Section 115 of the FCCPA 2018.

The statement further noted that the commission had summoned specific Sahad Stores staff to discuss corrective measures on February 12, 2024, but they failed to appear without justification, raising concerns about potential violations under Section 33(3) of the FCCPA.
