ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu, alongside state governors, came to a consensus yesterday to introduce state police as a pivotal strategy to tackle the surging insecurity in various regions of the nation.

This decision was one of the focal points discussed during an urgent meeting convened by the President at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, in response to the prevailing economic hardships and the increasing security threats nationwide.

The emergency session, which saw the participation of Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, also deliberated on enhancing the capacity of forest rangers to safeguard our woodlands and borders effectively.

In light of the recent upsurge in insecurity nationwide, there have been persistent calls from stakeholders and ethnic groups for the reintroduction of state police, a practice prevalent during the First Republic before its discontinuation by the Military.

Presently, several states have established vigilante groups, with the South-West region notably implementing Amotekun. Furthermore, President Tinubu has directed key security figures, including the National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Director-General of the Department of State Service, DSS, Yusuf Bichi, and Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to crackdown on individuals hoarding food commodities, ensuring they face appropriate legal actions.

Since President Tinubu’s inauguration speech on May 29, announcing the end of subsidies, the economy has faced significant downturns, leading to widespread protests across several states.

Despite efforts to mitigate the economic challenges, the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency has authorized the release of approximately 102,000 metric tons of assorted food items, including rice, maize, and millet.

Governors from various states attended the meeting, wherein President Tinubu assured them of the Federal Government’s collaboration in instituting mechanisms to facilitate the establishment of state police, superseding the reliance on vigilante groups.

Moreover, Tinubu emphasized the imperative of enhancing livestock development, particularly in poultry and fishing, across states, urging governors to prioritize clearing salary arrears and gratuities to stimulate economic activities.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, briefed State House Correspondents following the meeting, outlining significant decisions, including the consideration of establishing state police. He reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government and state governors towards ensuring the nation’s security and addressing prevailing challenges in the agricultural sector.

Additionally, the House of Representatives has urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to implement community policing provisions as delineated in the Nigeria Police Act 2020, highlighting the need for effective collaboration between security agencies and local communities to combat escalating violence across the country.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
