Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the commission, disclosed this during a recent press briefing in Abuja. Maiyaki emphasized the ongoing efforts of the NUC to approve new universities aimed at addressing the admissions gap in the nation.
He acknowledged the annual influx of approximately two million candidates seeking university admission, contrasted with the limited admission slots ranging between 500,000 and 700,000.
Maiyaki’s stance stands in contrast to concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders in the tertiary education sector. They oppose the proliferation of institutions, citing inadequate funding for existing universities.
“We are compelled to undertake the expansion of universities as a deliberate policy,” Maiyaki stated.
While Maiyaki highlighted the challenges faced by families striving to secure university education for their children, he noted the necessity to continue approving new universities.
He confirmed that the approval for two additional universities, bringing the total to 272, has been finalized and will be officially announced in the coming week.
Maiyaki reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to expanding access to universities to meet the growing demand for quality education. He referenced countries like Brazil and Indonesia, with smaller populations but a higher number of universities, as examples.
Efforts are underway to revitalize the university system through transnational education, allowing foreign universities to operate within Nigeria. Additionally, the NUC is reviewing applications for the establishment of distance learning centers to ensure the provision of high-quality education.
Regarding allegations of private universities charging fees in dollars, Maiyaki clarified that no tertiary institution in Nigeria is permitted to collect tuition fees in dollars. He emphasized that after thorough investigation, it was found that the alleged private university only charges dollars to foreign students.
