According to a statement from an Athletics Kenya executive committee member, Barnabas Korir, the funeral will be held on February 24. This decision comes after consultations with both the family and government officials who have assumed responsibility for the funeral preparations and protocol, as reported by AFP on Wednesday.
Kiptum, a 24-year-old father of two, along with his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizimana, met with a fatal accident on Sunday night in the Eldoret region, known as the heartland of Kenyan distance running.
In recognition of Kiptum’s significant contributions to athletics and his world-record achievements, Kenya’s cabinet issued a statement affirming their support for the family in giving him a deserving farewell. The statement praised Kiptum as a national hero and a sports powerhouse whose extraordinary accomplishments inspired millions worldwide. Notably, Kiptum made history by becoming the first person to complete a marathon in under two hours and one minute.
Kiptum’s remarkable feat occurred during the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, where he broke the world marathon record, surpassing his Kenyan counterpart Eliud Kipchoge’s previous best time by 34 seconds. His stellar performance positioned him as a favorite for the marathon event at the upcoming Paris Olympics, where he was anticipated to compete against Kipchoge for the first time.
In light of Kiptum’s untimely demise, Athletics Kenya has decided to cancel the trials for the African Games, originally scheduled for this Friday and Saturday. The organization cited the need to pay tribute to Kiptum’s memory as the reason for the cancellation. The selection process for the Kenyan team that will participate in the Games, slated to be held in Accra, Ghana, next month, will be rescheduled for a later date, which is yet to be determined.
