My name is Agatha Umeh, a 28-year-old from Okpuno Awka in the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. I am single and the fifth child in my family. After completing my National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Economics and Christian Religious Studies Education at Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe in 2016, I delved into various occupations, including tricycle riding, phone repair, and fish farming.

When did you start operating a tricycle, and what led to the conflicts with your male counterparts?

I began riding a tricycle around June 2023. From the very first day, I faced opposition from my male colleagues who felt threatened by my presence in the occupation. They colluded with ARTMA officials, led by someone named Goodluck, to harass and intimidate me. Their primary reason for targeting me was their jealousy, as they believed that passengers preferred my tricycle over theirs, affecting their earnings.

Could you recount specific instances of harassment and intimidation you’ve faced?

Certainly. Almost daily, I encountered harassment from both male riders and ARTMA officials. They would stop me on the road, discharge my passengers forcefully, and detain me without valid reasons. On several occasions, they impounded my tricycle, claiming fabricated violations. This harassment extended to levying heavier fees on me compared to my male counterparts, and even attempting to force me to ply a different route.

Have you taken any actions to address this situation?

Yes, I’ve made efforts to seek redress. I reported the matter to relevant authorities, including the police, but the harassment persisted. Even when higher authorities ordered the release of my impounded tricycle, the officials ignored the directives. I’ve also appealed for assistance from the public and government officials to stop the intimidation and obtain a new tricycle, as the current one is old and unreliable, exacerbating my financial struggles and health issues.

Despite the challenges, do you intend to continue operating the tricycle?

Absolutely. Riding the tricycle is my means of livelihood, supporting my family and covering essential expenses, including medical bills for my health conditions. Despite the adversity, I remain determined to persevere and urge authorities to take action against the perpetrators of this harassment.

In conclusion, Agatha Umeh’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in male-dominated industries and underscores the importance of addressing gender-based discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
