Fashola highlighted that the current practice of demanding advance payment of rent for up to three years or more poses a significant burden on tenants, leading to numerous unoccupied houses across the country.

He urged other states to emulate the tenancy bill enacted by the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2011, which prohibited landlords from collecting rent exceeding one year in advance from new tenants.

Fashola remarked, “The prevalent practice of requiring tenants to pay rent in advance for three, four, or five years has become burdensome for our nation. Many houses remain unoccupied due to this factor among others. While Lagos has taken steps by passing a rent control law, more states should follow suit to alleviate this burden.
