The accused individuals – Qudus Jokogbola, Siri Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Morenike – were brought before the court on charges of conspiracy, breach of peace, and causing bodily harm.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Samuel Isholla, the incident occurred on February 5, 2024, around 1:30 p.m. at Oba Akintoye Market, Lagos Island, Lagos State. It was alleged that the defendants, along with two others who remain at large, forcefully assaulted Anjorin-Lawal, resulting in bodily injuries and a breach of public peace.
The charges brought against the defendants are in violation of sections 168(d), 170(b), 411, and 413(2) of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. Notably, section 413(2) prescribes a two-year jail term for causing injury to a person or their reputation.
During the court proceedings, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their legal representation, led by Counsel S. Ade Oshodi and Ademola Olabiyi, appealed for bail, citing their clients’ status as market men and women.
Magistrate A.A Paul granted bail to each defendant in the sum of N200,000, with one surety required for each, who must be residents of Lagos State and provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government, among other conditions.
Until the bail conditions are met, the defendants will remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS). The case has been adjourned until March 11 for further mention.
Several All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants in Ondo State, who are loyal to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, have initiated legal action against the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the National Assembly primary elections. These aspirants, who were unsuccessful in their bids, are challenging the candidate list submitted to INEC, citing irregularities in the nomination process.
