The protest, led by women and youths dissatisfied with the high cost of living in the area, saw the arrest of Aisha Jibrin, aged 30, and two other women, Fatima Aliyu (57 years old), and Fatima Isyaku (43 years old), who purportedly spearheaded the demonstration.

In addition to these arrests, twenty-two other persons were also detained by the police.

According to the police statement released on Wednesday, the protest initiated when Aisha and a group of women blocked the Minna-Bida Road at the Kpakungu Roundabout, expressing their grievances over the perceived hardships inflicted by the government.

Subsequently, men and youths joined the demonstration, causing disruptions to vehicular movement.

Despite the intervention of police personnel at the scene, the protesters persisted, alleging that the police were mere puppets of the government and incapable of taking appropriate action.

The Niger State Police Command, however, declared the protest as violent in nature and confirmed the arrest of Aisha and her associates.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Wasiu, stated that minimum force was employed by the police to disperse the protesters after they resorted to violence, attacking law enforcement officers with various weapons and causing damage to police vehicles and property.

The arrested individuals were found in possession of items such as knives, scissors, cutlasses, sticks, and drugs during the police operation.

Aisha claimed during interrogation that she was unaware of the illegality of her actions and allegedly informed a local youth leader of their plans to protest, who failed to notify the police as promised.

All suspects have been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation and will face prosecution in court. The police have also vowed to apprehend other individuals involved in the violent protest.

The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, urged members of the public to uphold the law and seek appropriate channels to address grievances rather than resorting to unlawful activities.

Strategic Partnership Details

  • Formal Agreement: The two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the NDLEA headquarters.

  • Operational Integration: The partnership includes provisions for intelligence sharing, coordinated joint operations, officer capacity building, and the exchange of technical resources.

  • Joint Working Committee: A committee will be established to ensure the agreement translates into tangible operational results.

Rationale for Collaboration

  • Shared Criminal Networks: NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), noted that criminal syndicates often engage in both narcotics trafficking and the piracy of creative works, using proceeds from one illicit activity to finance the other.

  • Economic and Social Impact: NCC Director-General, Dr. John Asein, emphasized that organized piracy is a major criminal enterprise that undermines Nigeria’s creative economy, destroys jobs, and weakens national security.

  • Intersecting Supply Chains: Both agencies identified that the same clandestine networks, transportation routes, and financial channels used for drug trafficking are frequently utilized to distribute pirated goods and launder criminal proceeds.

  • Inter-Agency Synergy: The leadership of both organizations highlighted the importance of moving away from isolated operations toward a collaborative model that leverages the specific expertise and intelligence capabilities of each agency.

The initiative aims to more effectively disrupt illegal supply chains, dismantle criminal structures, and protect both the creative sector and the general public from the influence of organized crime.
