Consisting of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), West Africa Civil Society Forum (WACSOF), and Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), the groups voiced their plea during a media briefing session held in Lagos on Monday, February 5.

The CSOs also demanded the reinstatement of democratic governance in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, where military coups have led to power seizures.

In a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the dialogue, the coalition expressed concern over the recent declarations of withdrawal from ECOWAS by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, emphasizing that such threats should not be ignored.

The groups advocated for the lifting of sanctions imposed on these member states, which have inflicted suffering on their populations, particularly women and children.

“It is crucial to recall the commitment of member states to refrain from attacking each other as stipulated in the non-aggression treaty signed in 1976. Such attacks may manifest not only through military means.

“The ECOWAS leadership, in the interest of upholding a peaceful, cohesive, and prosperous economic bloc, must adhere to the principles of mutual respect that have historically fostered regional integration in Africa.

“The community must acknowledge the provisions safeguarding each member state from external interference in its internal affairs. Furthermore, amidst escalating trans-border insecurity, a more unified ECOWAS is indispensable for quelling security threats in the region,” the statement asserted.

Signed by CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), WACSOF’s General Secretary, Kop’ep Dabugat, and a representative from TMG, Najaatu Mohammed, the communique emphasized the imperative for ECOWAS member states, including Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, to reflect deeply on the collective achievements of regional integration.

It underscored the significance of peacekeeping missions, facilitation of free movement of people and goods, trade facilitation through customs duties and tariffs removal, and collaborative infrastructural development initiatives such as the West African power pool, which led to the construction of the Diama and Manatali dams in Senegal and Mali, respectively.

“At a time when the region is progressing towards establishing a single market to bolster trade and development, it is deeply disheartening to witness leaders eschew diplomacy and dialogue, opting instead for community dissolution,” the statement concluded.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
