Alia’s alleged feud with the party’s state leader and the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has led to a deep divide within the party, causing members to take sides. While the state party chairman, Austin Agada, and the majority of the executive committee remain loyal to Akume, a few others have aligned themselves with Alia.

Agada, a staunch supporter of Akume, has been an outspoken critic of the state governor, possibly contributing to his current predicament. Recently, Dan Onjeh, the APC senatorial candidate in the 2023 Benue South election, lodged a petition against Agada with the APC national leadership, accusing him of undermining the party during the last election.

In response, the former Ward Chairman of Ehaje 1, Owukpa, announced Agada’s suspension, but the national body swiftly nullified it, instructing the party to hold off pending a review. Nevertheless, on Thursday, Benjamin Omakolo, the State Welfare Secretary, was purportedly announced as the acting chairman of the party.

However, Omakolo faced suspension by the party’s disciplinary committee in Apa LGA for alleged misappropriation of funds, insubordination, and non-payment of party dues. Despite this, sources revealed that the governor is actively working to reverse Omakolo’s suspension, signaling a shift in support away from Agada.

In a surprising turn of events, a State High Court in Makurdi restrained Agada from parading himself as the party chairman, contradicting the National Working Committee’s position that Agada remains the “bonafide” State Chairman.

Insiders report that the governor is now aligning himself with Omakolo, aiming to replace Agada with him as the acting State Chairman. Allegedly, there are plans for party executives in Igoro, Apa LGA, to publicly deny authorizing Omakolo’s suspension, indicating a complex web of political maneuvering.

This development follows an attack on Agada at the party secretariat, where he was later taken away by the police. Concerns have been raised about the challenges Agada is facing within the party, with some elders from Benue South seemingly distancing themselves from him.

While some attribute Agada’s woes to his alleged disrespect towards the governor, others view it as a manifestation of the ongoing power struggle within the Benue APC. The situation remains fluid, and the party is grappling with internal tensions that threaten to undermine its unity and stability.

Speaking at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi urged all contenders to unite and work towards the party’s success in the upcoming general elections. He emphasized that while not everyone can win, a unified front is essential for the party’s future.

Obi commended the rapid progress of the NDC, noting its achievement in conducting congresses, conventions, and primaries within a remarkably short period of about 90 days. He appealed for patience and sacrifice from all members, highlighting the importance of the party’s collective goals over individual outcomes.

With the primary process concluded, Obi stated that the focus must shift from internal competitions to building the NDC as a viable political alternative for 2027. He promised a different approach to leadership, characterized by inclusivity, compassion, and accountability.

To further strengthen the party, Obi announced plans for a nationwide engagement tour, moving away from centralized Abuja meetings to connect directly with Nigerians at the grassroots level. This initiative aims to deepen political education and build policies that directly address the needs of the populace. He also acknowledged the significant challenges facing the nation, including insecurity and poor infrastructure, promising a detailed campaign message in due course.

NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas echoed Obi’s sentiments regarding the party’s rapid growth, which he described as extraordinary. He attributed this success to collective effort and divine guidance, likening the NDC to a vehicle for national rescue and renewal.

Party Leader Seriake Dickson praised the resilience of the members and announced a comprehensive reconciliation process to unite the party following the primaries. He encouraged those who did not win to maintain hope and remain committed to the party’s future opportunities.
