The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized the rerun election held in Igbo-Eze/Udenu federal constituency, Enugu State, labeling it as a farce and demanding the complete cancellation of the entire exercise.

Umar Farouk, the national secretary of the party, led the LP’s monitoring team to the polling stations involved in the by-elections on Saturday. In a statement to the media, Farouk highlighted serious concerns about the lack of adherence to due process during the electoral process.

Farouk cited instances where accreditation procedures were compromised, result sheets were allegedly hijacked, and Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) machines were reportedly disregarded. He also claimed that voters were unjustly denied the opportunity to exercise their voting rights.

Addressing the press alongside the LP’s House of Representatives candidate, Dennis Agbo, Farouk urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly annul elections in areas where such irregularities were reported.

Dennis Agbo echoed Farouk’s sentiments and specifically called for the immediate and complete cancellation of the supplementary election. Agbo accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of employing local government vigilantes to intimidate LP supporters during the voting process.

Agbo further alleged that LP members were forcibly removed from polling booths by these local vigilantes. In a startling accusation, he claimed that INEC officials, allegedly following instructions from PDP representatives, permitted voting to occur in private residences.

The Labour Party’s strong stance reflects its dissatisfaction with the conduct of the rerun election and underscores its demand for a thorough review and annulment of the entire electoral process in the affected areas. The party urges INEC to address the reported irregularities promptly to restore confidence in the electoral system.
