Reports from Daily Trust state that women, supported by young girls, children, vigilantes, and volunteers, targeted shops and joints selling alcoholic products, seizing and destroying them. The women organized into groups and, with the approval of community and traditional leaders, carried out the exercise.
Expressing their concerns, one woman stated, “These drinks are turning our men into irresponsible people. The drinks are weakening them, taking away their strengths and making them useless.” The women emphasized the negative impact of locally produced alcoholic drinks and intoxicants, particularly those with high chemical concentrations.
The women’s frustration stems from the belief that these drinks are not only harming their husbands but also affecting the productivity of the younger generation. They claim that the substances lead to a lack of strength for men to perform physical tasks and contribute to family responsibilities.
While some shop owners took precautions by locking their shops and fleeing, the determined women have vowed to return with more stringent measures. However, some youths in the community argue that destroying the drinks won’t solve the issue, emphasizing the need for government empowerment programs to provide alternative opportunities for the youth.
