Alake condemned the activities of illegal miners, labeling them a significant crime against Nigeria and its citizens, deeming such actions unacceptable. The minister made these remarks during a meeting with Licensed Minerals Holders, Laterite/Sand Operators, and Dealers in Kaduna State on Thursday.

He specified, “Miners and Operators owed the federal government more than N2trn,” with the Kaduna State segment accounting for “over N300bn.” Emphasizing the urgency of clearing these debts, the minister urged operators in Kaduna State to take decisive actions.

Simultaneously, the minister directed the Special Mines Taskforce in Kaduna State to crack down on illegal miners and ensure the timely payment of monthly royalties and other taxes owed to the federal government. The task force comprises members from various security agencies, headed by Mines officers in the state.

Alake criticized the non-remittance of collected royalties and taxes on mineral resources to the federal government, cautioning that states failing to comply would face penalties. He clarified that mining falls under the exclusive list controlled by the federal government, prohibiting states and local governments from collecting royalties or mining taxes.

The activated Special Mines Taskforce in Kaduna State has commenced operations to combat illegal mining and ensure the regular payment of royalties and other taxes to the government.

The minister warned miners against operating without a valid mining license, urging those with licenses to report to the Mines Office in Kaduna to obtain permits before mobilizing to their respective sites.

The purpose of the meeting was to unveil the ministry’s plans for miners and operators for the year 2024 and beyond. Alake highlighted the prioritization of the mining sector under President Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing the significance of the gathering.

The Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Kaduna branch, Ado Dogo, represented by the association’s Secretary, Kashim Hussaini, emphasized the necessity of the interface between miners and regulators. He expressed concern about state governors interfering in mining activities, urging them to respect the laws governing mining in their respective states.
