Nigerian Don Criticizes FG And ECOWAS For Their Approach To Niger Coup
A Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Chrisland University, Babafemi Badejo, has criticized the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for suspending Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso in response to military takeovers in these countries. The military regimes in the mentioned nations promptly withdrew from ECOWAS, asserting their “sovereign decision” to leave, citing deviations from the ideals of the organization’s founders and pan-Africanism…….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Badejo argued that ECOWAS and the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, should have opted for diplomatic solutions rather than resorting to threats after the military interventions in Niger. The three countries, grappling with jihadist violence and poverty, accused ECOWAS of straying from its foundational principles.
Following the coup in Niger in July 2023, ECOWAS, under Tinubu’s leadership, imposed sanctions on the military personnel responsible, demanding the restoration of constitutional order within a one-week ultimatum. Financial transactions with Niger were suspended, and all service transactions, including energy, were frozen. Despite these measures, the military leaders resisted calls to reinstate democracy, leading ECOWAS to decide on deploying troops in Niger during a meeting in Abuja in August 2023.

Revenue Shortfall: Total revenue stood at ₦20.98 trillion, falling ₦4.90 trillion short of the ₦25.88 trillion target, largely driven by lower-than-expected oil earnings (gross oil revenue missed its target by ₦4.93 trillion due to lower crude prices and production output).

Debt Servicing & Public Debt: Total debt expenditure surged to ₦12.36 trillion (exceeding the budgeted ₦8.27 trillion by 52.71%). By December 2024, Nigeria’s total public debt climbed to ₦144.67 trillion, pushing the debt-to-GDP ratio to 61.22%.
