Shehu assumed her role, appointed by President Tinubu in October 2023, and received Senate confirmation on October 18, 2023.
Having served as the National Coordinator of the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, Shehu applied her banking and professional expertise to facilitate the digitization of the program.
Her professional journey includes employment at the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development from 2017 to 2022.
A native of Kafin Dagi village, Katsina, Katsina State, Shehu completed her primary education and attended the Federal Government College, Kaduna State, for her secondary education, earning her West African Examination Certificate.
Continuing her academic pursuits, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, and later obtained a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the same institution.
Post-education, Shehu fulfilled the National Youth Service Corps requirement at the Afri-Project Consortium under the Petroleum Trust Fund.
Commencing her professional career, she spent a decade in the banking sector, working at the former Intercity Bank before joining Unity and Access Banks. She excelled in various banking units, including cash, funds transfer, clearing, reconciliation, operations, and coordination across all three banks.
Transitioning to politics in 2010, Shehu held significant roles, initially appointed in 2011 as a Senior Special Assistant to the former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema. She also served as a member of the state’s Internal Revenue Board.

Mrs. Rachel Alamu, Principal of Esinle Community High School, has shared a harrowing account of her 56-day captivity after being kidnapped alongside teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. According to Alamu, the military offensive became so severe that the captives momentarily feared the air strikes more than their abductors. This intense military activity also enraged the kidnappers, who had previously raised hopes among the hostages by claiming Governor Seyi Makinde had given assurances of their release before the end of the week.
Tensions peaked when a gang commander summoned Alamu, blaming the government’s actions for frustrating the group and threatening to kill a captive. In a desperate plea, Alamu begged the commander not to harm anyone else, reminding him of the two men from their group who had already been killed. The commander eventually calmed down and asked Alamu how the stalemate could be resolved, prompting her to urge him to make demands that the victims’ families could realistically meet.
The captives faced another terrifying moment when they heard sounds of digging at night, fearing the abductors were preparing graves. However, the situation shifted unexpectedly when the gang ordered them to move camp, threatening to kill the children if they cried out for food. Throughout the ordeal, Alamu’s concerns extended beyond her own safety to the health of her husband and the possibility of not finding him at home. She expressed profound gratitude to God for surviving the 56 days and reuniting with her family.
To help public servants collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the upcoming governorship election, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Tuesday, July 28, 2026, a work-free day.
