During the ceremony, Governor Umo Eno emphasized the role of the gunboats in curbing the activities of pirates and other criminal elements within coastal communities. He highlighted the positive impact on the blue economy, fostering water transportation within and beyond neighboring states while enhancing the livelihoods of coastal residents.
Governor Eno praised the collaboration between the Nigerian Navy, other security agencies, and the state government. He clarified that the waterways’ operations would be a joint task force led by the Nigerian Navy, supported by sister agencies and locals familiar with the maritime environment, potentially identified through the Ibom Community Watch program.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, commended the governor’s visionary approach to exploring the blue economy. He described the procurement of the 14 patrol boats as a testament to the state government’s commitment to ensuring a secure maritime environment for business. In addition to his remarks on governance, he highlighted Lagos State’s significant economic progress under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting an increase in GDP from under $100 billion to approximately $259 billion in purchasing power parity terms over the last six years, alongside rising income levels.
