In a move aimed at protecting the rights of employees, the House of Representatives is proposing a bill that would criminalize the non-payment or failure to pay salaries by employers and corporate bodies across Nigeria. The bill stipulates that it is unlawful for any employer to neglect or refuse to pay the remuneration of employees as provided under the Act. If an employee’s compensation remains unpaid beyond the specified period, they have the right to submit a written demand to their employer for the payment of their entitlement. Failure to remit payment within five business days may lead to the employee petitioning the court for redress.
Employers found guilty of failing to pay salaries risk three to six months of imprisonment without the possibility of a fine. Corporate entities failing to adhere to a court order regarding employee remuneration face a daily fine of N10,000 or possible closure for a period not exceeding three months.
Additionally, the bill imposes a N10,000 penalty on any officer or agent who knowingly permits non-compliance with the directive until it is rectified. The legislation also mandates employers to provide written terms of employment to returning employees within 14 working days, outlining comprehensive terms and conditions, remuneration, payment methods, and termination procedures.
The bill further protects employees by ensuring that their petition for remuneration payment does not serve as grounds for disciplinary action, inquiry, suspension, or termination. In cases of employer bankruptcy, the proposed law prioritizes the payment of outstanding remuneration to employees.

The ADC alleges that officers of the Nigeria Police Force and members of the OSPAC vigilante group violently disrupted the gathering, assaulting participants, seizing mobile phones, and causing multiple injuries.
Furthermore, the party claims that when Jeffrey Wobodo attempted to secure bail for the detainees, the Isiokpo Area Commander, ACP Felix Ojiaku, stated that the men would be charged with cultism due to an “order from above.” The ADC has strongly condemned this rationale, asserting that “political opposition is not cultism” and that peaceful political participation is a constitutional right, not a criminal offense.
The ADC is also calling attention to a pattern of intimidation against opposition figures in the region. They have highlighted a prior incident where the home of arrested member Isaiah Thomas was allegedly attacked and set ablaze by individuals linked to OSPAC and a former LGA Chairman, following a political gathering. The party is urging the Inspector-General of Police, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, and the National Human Rights Commission to intervene immediately. They are demanding a full investigation into the conduct of the security personnel involved, the actions of the vigilante group, and the motivations behind these politically charged arrests, warning that such actions threaten the democratic process ahead of the 2027 elections.
