Surge In Food Prices Hits Nigerians In November, NBS Report-Reveals
According to the latest report released on Friday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average prices of key food items experienced a significant increase in November. The data disclosed that the average price of 1kg of Brown Beans surged by 6.18% from N790.01 in October 2023. Similarly, the average price of 1kg Onion Bulb saw a remarkable year-on-year increase of 60.62%, climbing from N425.71 in November 2022 to N683.78 in November 2023. Additionally, the average price of 1kg of Tomatoes spiked by 66.69% year-on-year and 12.24% from N675.91 in October 2023 to N758.65 in November 2023.
The report highlighted Lagos as the state with the highest average price of rice in November, reaching N1,122.42 for 1kg of local rice, while Kebbi recorded the lowest at N688.00.
For 1kg of Boneless Beef, Anambra State recorded the highest average price at N3,850.47, contrasting with Yobe State, which reported the lowest at N2,533.33.
Imo State topped the list for the highest average price of 1kg Brown Beans at N1,109.75, with Jigawa recording the lowest at N575.00. Anambra State also led in the category of Onion Bulb sold loose, reporting an average price of N872.23, while Gombe had the lowest at N506.41.
Delta State stood out for the highest average price of 1kg of Tomatoes at N1,505.16, and Kano had the lowest at N396.04.
Regional analysis revealed that the South-West had the highest average price for 1kg of local Rice at N956.28, while the South-South followed closely at N932.47. The North-East recorded the lowest average price at N776.12.
In the category of 1kg of Boneless Beef, the South-East and South-West reported the highest averages at N3,643.65 and N3,290.11, respectively, while the North-East recorded the lowest at N2,632.22.
For 1kg of Brown Beans (sold loose), the South-East reported the highest average price at N1,034.08, and the South-West followed at N977.98, with the North-West recording the lowest at N663.96.
Onion Bulb prices were highest in the South-East and South-South at N817.11 and N775.34, respectively, while the North-East reported the lowest at N529.95.
Finally, the South-South led in the average price of 1kg of Tomatoes at N1,307.66, followed by the South-West at N1,047.18, with the North-West reporting the lowest at N434.80.

Oyedele Steps In As Finance Minister, Takes Over National Economy Portfolio.

The transition, which reportedly took place on Thursday evening, was confirmed in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Efe Ovuakporie.
According to the statement, the handover was concluded within the timeframe set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his inaugural address, Oyedele pledged to consolidate ongoing reforms while delivering measurable economic outcomes.
He said his administration would prioritise fiscal discipline, transparency, and improved performance across key sectors of the economy.
He also expressed his readiness to work closely with staff of the ministry to strengthen efficiency and service delivery.
Oyedele commended his predecessor, Wale Edun, for his role in advancing Nigeria’s economic reform agenda, and thanked President Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility.
The Permanent Secretary, Raymond Omachi, alongside the Permanent Secretary (Special Duties), Mohammed Danjuma, welcomed the new minister and assured him of the full support and cooperation of the ministry’s workforce.
During Edun’s tenure, the ministry implemented several fiscal reforms aimed at improving revenue generation and economic coordination. However, the period also faced challenges, including budget implementation constraints that affected ministries, departments, and agencies.
There were also concerns over outstanding payments owed to pensioners and contractors during the same period.
