Senator Ndume, a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, has argued that the sanctions are illegal and detrimental to the people of Niger and neighboring towns. In response to Ndume’s criticism, the coalition, led by Dr. Jibrilla Gwadabe, asserted that Ndume’s position reflects a lack of understanding of coercive diplomacy.
Gwadabe emphasized that Ndume’s constituency has been a significant beneficiary of counter-terrorism efforts, and military rule in Niger could exacerbate regional challenges of insecurity and instability. He defended ECOWAS, stating that the organization is not at fault and that Niger Republic is a signatory to the protocol protecting civil constitutional rule.
According to Gwadabe, ECOWAS Heads of State and Government are concerned about the dire humanitarian situation in the region, particularly its impact on education, livelihood, and the wellbeing of Nigeriens, including children and women. He highlighted ECOWAS’s approval of resources and support to address the humanitarian crisis, which was aggravated by the junta’s blockade of humanitarian assistance.
Gwadabe advised Ndume to focus on calling for Bazoum’s release and an expedited transition to constitutional rule, acknowledging the efforts of ECOWAS Commission and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing the situation.
