The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) command in Cross River has reported the confiscation of a total of 2.05 tons of hard drugs from drug peddlers between January and December in the state. State Commander Rachel Umebuali, also the Commander of Narcotics (CN), revealed this information in a Monday interview in Calabar. The seized hard drugs encompassed various substances such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and psychotropics. Notable quantities included 1.64 tonnes of cannabis, 3.5 grams of cocaine, 4.3 grams of heroin, 81.9 grams of methamphetamine, and 410.24 kilograms of psychoactive substances.

Umebuali emphasized the challenges faced by the NDLEA command, citing issues like inadequate operational vehicles, inaccessible and poor road conditions, especially during the rainy season, as well as the influence of cultism and communal crises. Despite these challenges, the command achieved success in securing convictions for some suspects, while others were discharged and acquitted by the courts.

Expressing concern over the rising cases of drug abuse among youths, the narcotics commander identified vehicles and motorbikes as the preferred modes of operation for drug peddlers. She stated the agency’s commitment to improving its performance in the coming year, aiming to address the challenges faced and further contribute to the fight against drug-related offenses.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.
